Purpose of the ATF .EFT Fingerprint File

We often get asked about the difference between the .EFT File and submitting physical FD-258 fingerprint cards when applying for a tax stamp. The biggest difference between the .EFT File and the physical FD-258 fingerprint cards is that the .EFT File is only used for ATF eForm tax stamp applications, while the physical FD-258 fingerprint cards can be used for physical tax stamp applications and ATF eForm applications. .EFT Files can be converted to physical cards that can be used for paper tax stamp applications, but you can't use the .EFT File directly with a paper tax stamp application without a conversion service.

The biggest benefit to using the .EFT File with your tax stamp applications, is the fact that it will speed up your application. That means that you would be approved faster by using an .EFT File. With the .EFT File, you would simply upload the file to your ATF eForm tax stamp applications or have your FFL upload your .EFT File to your ATF eForm tax stamp applications, and you won't be required to send any paperwork to the ATF for your application. You would still need to send the CLEO copies of your application to your CLEO, but the ATF side is taken care of. Conversely, applying with physical FD-258 fingerprint cards require the cover letter and the physical fingerprint cards to be sent to the ATF, which can delay the application process.
