Upcoming NICS E-Check changes

Data integrity and security ensures information, especially personable identifiable information, is maintained accurately, completely, consistently, and reliably from creation to deletion, at every stage of the data's life, to include its storage, transfer, retrieval, and processing.  As a NICS community, we all have a responsibility to ensure the integrity and security of data as it relates to background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).  Collectively, it is our responsibility to better protect our customer’s interests as well as our own.

Therefore, the FBI’s NICS Section is making two important changes.

First, the amount of information accessible by a federal firearms licensee (FFL) on the NICS E-Check will be different when compared to what users may be accustomed to.  Beginning Monday, September 29, 2025, an FFL, and it’s NICS E-Check users will be able to view only the last 88 days of customer transactions under the NTN history query option.  The level of details viewable for each transaction will follow normal purge guidelines based upon the transaction’s current or final status.  Should you need information related to your denied transactions beyond that time, please contact the NICS Section’s liaison team for assistance, at nicsliaison@fbi.gov.

Second, the NICS Section will soon be requiring Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) access for users of the NICS E-Check.  In the coming weeks, you will be receiving more information related to this transition and how you and your employees can begin preparing.    Thank you for your patience as we work toward providing a more secure service for you and your customers.
