How to guide and walk-through guide for the ATF Form e5320.20 – ATF e5320.20 Application to Transport Interstate or to Temporarily Export Certain National Firearms Act (NFA) Firearms

Step By Step Walk-Through Guide Below

The ATF Form 20 or the ATF 5320.20 Application to Transport NFA Firearms is required when you are transporting your NFA firearms across state lines or to an address that is different then the address on your ATF Form 4 or ATF Form 1 that contains the ATF Tax Stamp.  Note: If you are transporting your NFA firearms across state lines you need to be aware of the laws, rules and regulations of the state you are transporting to and/or through.  The ATF 5320.20 form can be used for a permanent transportation to a new location or a temporary location.  

Please Note, that in order to use the ATF e5320.20, you will need to have had approved NFA firearms under your eForm's account and the ATF e5320.20 can only be used with NFA firearms that have a control number on the approved tax stamp.  If that is not the case, you will need to use the paper ATF 5320.20.  You can find our paper ATF 5320.20 walk-through guide here.  

Step by Step Walk-Through Guide for the ATF e5320.20 Application to Transport NFA Firearms. 

Screen 1 - Ownership and Relocation Information

Ownership Type. You would select the ownership type: corporation, individual, other legal entity, trust.

Relocation Type.  This is the relocation type for the firearms. 

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 2 - Intended Use of Form

This information and authorization is required prior to transporting any destructive device, machinegun, short-barreled rifle, or short-barreled shotgun in interstate or foreign commerce under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. § 922(a)(4) and 27 CFR § 478.28.

This information is not required for licensees subject to the exceptions in 27 CFR § 478.28(c).

Approval authorizes the registered owner to transport the designated firearm(s) only during the time period specified. The authorization does not carry or grant import relief from any statutory or regulatory provisions relating to firearms other than those listed in 27 CFR § 478.28.

The registered owner must create a PIN (Personal Identification Number) prior to submitting the eForm 5320.20. The PIN must be used to digitally certify and sign the eForm.

Screen 3 - Application

Dates of Temporary Transport/Dates of Transport. Dates firearm (s) will be away from original location, if to be returned to that location, (or dates in transit, if to be permanently relocated).  Fill in the dates that you are going to transport the NFA firearms.  If the move is permanent, you will then indicate the dates that the NFA firearms will be in transit. 

Internal Control Number. If you want to create an internal control for your records, you can add that here and it is not required.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 4 - Registered Owner

Registered Owner.  This is automatically completed based off of your profile information if you are an individual applicant.  If your tax stamps are approved under a gun trust, corporation or other legal entity, you will need to type that in here as it appears on the approved tax stamp.  If entered incorrectly, you can have issues adding the firearms in Screen 5:  Firearms.

Address of Registered Owner.  This is automatically completed based off of your profile information.

Mailing Address.  This is the address that the approved or denied ATF 5320.20 form will be mailed to, only include this address if the returned address.  If this address is the same address from your profile, you can select the radio button, Same as Current Address.  If not, you can type in the correct mailing address.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 5: Firearms

The firearm page is you will add the firearm(s) that you are transporting.

You will be able to add firearms by clicking add firearm from control number.  However, if you don't know the control number of the approved NFA firearm, you can search by the firearms information or by a social security number and serial number.

Find Control Number by Manufacturer: You will type in the manufacturer name's name of the firearm to load the product type, model, caliber / unit of measure. The length of barrel overall length, and serial number will need to be entered in and match the information from the approved tax stamp. If you are having issues with finding your control number, you can click the link for more/additional help, which takes you to the "Ask the Experts" screen. 

Find by SSN & Serial Number:  You will simply type in the transferor's social security number and click lookup inventory to load the transferor's eForm approved NFA firearms. You can then flow through the drop down menus to select the firearm that is being transferred.  You will need to click the radio button certifying that, "I [transferor] certify, under penalty of perjury, that I am listed as the Registrant or a Responsible Person for this weapon on an ATF application".  Then you can click find to get your control number.  

Once you have the control number from either of the two methods, you can click the Add Firearm from Control Number button to add the control number.  The window that opens will ask you to enter in your control number.  Click Find form, enter in the firearms serial number for verification and click add firearm to add the firearm into the table. 

You can repeat this process to add additional firearms, as needed.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 6: Transportation Information

Reason for Transportation of Firearms.  This is the reason for the transportation and varies from case to case, e.g. permanent change of address, hunting trip, etc.

Transporting From.  This is automatically completed based off of your profile information.

Transporting To.  You can select an address or coordinates that you will be transporting the firearms to.  Coordinates won't be available if you are permanently moving the NFA firearms to a new address. 

Mode of Transportation. You can select the most appropriate mode of transportation from the drop down list, e.g. mail, plane, third party carrier, personally owned vehicle (POV), etc.  More than 1 can be selected if applicable.  Options, like, third party carrier, plane, boat, will require the company name of the third party carrier, plane, and or boat.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 7: Electronic Documents

On this screen you can uploaded any additional documentation that is relevant to your ATF 5320.20.  If you are transporting to GPS coordinates,  you would need to upload, GPS navigation and Maps Documents.  Other documents that may need to be uploaded are amended gun trust documents, state permits, official competition invitation, etc.  Depending on your ATF 5320.20, you may not need to upload any documents on this screen.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 8: Verify

On this screen you will be able to verify your application paperwork to make sure everything is correct.  If everything is not correct, you can go back through the application and make the necessary corrections.  If your application is correct, you can click the, I verify all the above information is correct radio button and certify the below information.

I certify that the information on this form is to the best of my knowledge and belief, true and complete, that the transportation does not involve a transfer of title, that the transportation or possession of the listed firearm(s) is not inconsistent with the laws at the place of destination, that all such laws will be complied with, and that, where applicable, all temporary export license provisions under the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 have been complied with.

Click Next to proceed.

Screen 9: Certification

If your application doesn't have any errors, you will see a green check mark.  If your application does have errors, you can the link to be taken to the screen with the error(s).

You will need to lastly certify the below information.

The undersigned certifies that the information on this form is to the best of my knowledge and belief, true and complete, that the transportation does not involve a transfer of title, that the transportation or possession of the listed firearm(s) is not inconsistent with the laws at the place of destination, that all such laws will be complied with, and that, where applicable, all temporary export license provisions under the Arms Export Control Act of 1976 have been complied with.

After certifying the above information by clicking the radio button, you can sign and submit the application by clicking the sign and submit button.
