Step 1: When propellant gases expand from the small barrel chamber into open air, the rapid pressure and temperature change creates the characteristic loud gun-blast sound.
Step 2: Supression: Silencers reduce the noise by giving gases a larger, contained space to dissipate and cool before exiting. Internal baffles (1) divide the silencer into various expansion chambers (2) for maximum efficiency.
