A simple diagram of how a suppressor or silencer works.  After firing there is a high-pressure of expanding gas from the propellant.  The suppressor consists of a series of chambers, which captures the high-pressure gas, giving it space to cool and dissipate. Suppressor and silencers can reduce the noise signature by 2o to 40 decibels.
